Five PhD candidates from the INRESCOS research school presented their research at KSEE 2026, a special session held as part of the 21st IEEE International Conference on Systems of Systems Engineering (SoSE 2026) in Kongsberg. The session brought together researchers and industry experts to explore how digital ways of working can strengthen systems engineering and support collaboration across disciplines.
KSEE 2026 focused on the theme"From Intent to Impact – Systems of Systems Engineering with Digital Ways of Working", highlighting how shared models and digital continuity help connect informal decision‑making with formal system artefacts, improve transparency, manage change, and ensure that intended system capabilities are effectively realized in operation.
The INRESCOS candidates showcased a diverse range of research topics addressing some of today's most pressing technological and sustainability challenges. Their presentations highlighted the breadth of expertise within the research school, spanning energy systems, autonomous operations, renewable energy, circular economy, and industrial decarbonisation.
Ali Kaboli (NTNU) shared his work on advanced informatics for distributed grid balancing through flexibility aggregation. The research explores how distributed energy resources can contribute to a more stable and sustainable power system while creating value for end users.
Luciano Netto de Lima (USN), introduced his work on cooperative autonomous drone fleets for preparedness and critical operations. His research focuses on how multiple autonomous drones can coordinate their activities to efficiently cover large areas in applications such as search and rescue, surveillance, inspection, and environmental emergency response.
Ramy Antar Ahmed Alham (University of Agder) presented research on modelling and control of self-hoisting cranes for offshore wind turbine maintenance. The project aims to make maintenance operations safer, more efficient, and more cost-effective in challenging offshore environments. In 2026 he received the INRESCOS scholarship for Internship, giving him the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an industrial environment and strengthen the link between academic research and real-world engineering challenges.
Sachin Banjade (USN) presented promising results from his research on biomethanation technology for biogas upgrading and industrial CO₂ conversion. By converting carbon dioxide into methane, the technology has the potential to support industrial decarbonisation and renewable energy storage.
Md Ali Akram (NTNU) focused on circularity in the automotive Supplier industry through advanced sorting and recycling of post-consumer aluminium scrap. His research investigates how innovative technologies can enable closed-loop aluminium recycling, reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions while supporting sustainable manufacturing.
The presentations demonstrated how doctoral research is contributing to solutions for real-world challenges across industries, from autonomous maritime and offshore operations to renewable energy and circular manufacturing.
